CIE Media Studies International A Level Advanced Portfolio
Coursework Proposal:
- Will you work independently or in a group? If a group, who will you be working with?
I will work independently.
- What will the subject of your documentary be? Explain what key questions you will be asking about this subject?
Climate change.
How can we change our daily lives to help prevent the change?
- Who will your target audience(s) be? Remember you can have primary, secondary, tertiary audiences and use proper audience terminology when describing them (demographics like age, gender, etc and psychographics like aspirer, reformer, mainstreamer etc)
Primary audience- Age 16-26, male and female, mainstreamers, reformer.
Secondary audience- Age 40-70, male and female, hoping to get an insight into the subject.
Tertiary audience- Age 10-15, male and female, the educational purpose for school.
- What research on the topic will you need to do? Remember that your research should show greater sophistication than your research for the Foundation Portfolio.
I will do great research online. Looking up articles, discussions, videos of interviews or something else.
I will look at different documentaries that look at the issues of climate change, endangered species extinction, ocean life, and many more.
I will visit some libraries to find some books that cover the subject of climate change.
I will talk to some participants in the ‘fight for climate change’, to get some better insight into the whole situation.
- What style or mode of the documentary will you adopt? What codes and conventions of the documentary genre will you adhere to? Will you subvert any of these expected codes?
How will you use film and photography editing tools in a more sophisticated way than last year? What specifically will you have to learn to do this and how will this help you to be more creative?
My documentary will be a hybrid. It will contain poetic and expository modes.
I will try to create some beautiful poetic shots looking at the nature aspect of the documentary. I will also have some interviews with teachers, students and climate change participants. The documentary will be using some musical soundtracks, as well as a poem *still not 100 per cent sure*.
- What planning tasks will you carry out? You can include any planning but should include what you intend to do for your preliminary task, and how you will test this on your target audience.
In my preliminary task, I will do the introduction for my documentary. It will start by the person taking in the mise-en-scene and there each time I will add another voice on top. The shots will expose some pretty side of nature and some bad side of change. The voices and the picture go faster until they stop and you will see something peaceful and hear a strong narrators voice saying: ‘The change is happening faster than ever… what can you do about it?’.
- Minor tasks and potential distribution – how will you create a clear sense of branding between the five-minutes documentary extract and the social media and poster minor tasks?
Which TV channel would you see broadcasting your documentary and why? How would you make your three productions fit into their usual house style and appeal to their target audience?
I will broadcast my documentary on Netflix. Because it is very easily accessible to everyone it will target my audience. The trailer will be released on NETFLIX before hand and the notifications will suggest it to the viewers.
