Costumes for film noir.

Costumes for film noir are quite basic. Women usually women wear dresses while men wear suits.
The movie night and the city involves a very cliche costume design for women and men with an addition of Todarov's theory.

Gene Tierney as Mary Bristol (1920–1991)As you see in the picture she is wearing a white, loose dress which makes her look really pure and good (princess). She is wearing light make-up which brings out her natural beauty.

Googie Withers as Helen Nosseross (1917–2011)
This character look like more feast and powerful. She is wearing a low cut dress in color black (could be associated with evil. She is wearing a pearl necklace which shows that she is a wealthy woman, could be refereed to as a false hero.

Richard Widmark as Harry Fabian (1914–2008)
He is a dreamer which we can see from the white flower in his chest pocket. His suit is lighter color which makes him look good and pure. He has a hat on which could be a link to youthfulness and exploration, could be refereed to as a protagonist.

Francis L. Sullivan as Philip Nosseross (1903–1956)
This man could be refereed to as a villain. He is wearing a black suit which could symbolize evil powers. He has a handkerchief in his chest pocket which is very different to Harry Fabian. His hairstyle is very neat which could symbolize wealth.
